Trellis Installer

Trellises are structures characterized by their vertical posts and horizontal cross-pieces, serving as a support for climbing plants, a decorative addition to gardens and landscapes, or as a latticed screen or barrier. Trellises are available in a diverse range of shapes and sizes, and can be constructed from materials including wood, metal, or plastic. An arbor or pergola may incorporate a trellis in it as well.

How to Install a Trellis

The placement of the trellis will have an impact on the method of installation. Consider if your trellis will be situated in the garden, a pot, a wall, or a fence. Once that has been determined, proceed to the relevant installation guidelines for your specific project.

How to Install a Trellis on a Fence or Wall

Attaching a trellis to a wall or fence can be accomplished with the use of trellis brackets. These brackets allow for the trellis to be positioned away from the surface it is being mounted on, improving air flow and offering plants room to grow. The installation process for trellis brackets is typically straightforward and can be done with a cordless drill and screws. However, as each bracket may have its own unique installation procedure, it is important to follow the specific instructions that come with the trellis bracket.

How to Install a Freestanding Trellis

1. Dig Holes For the Posts
In order to anchor a freestanding trellis, you need to install posts that it can be anchored to. The holes for installation should be spaced eight feet apart and measure approximately 9 inches in width and 2 and a half feet in depth.
2. Pour Gravel and Concrete
You need to pour gravel and concrete into the holes in order to set them and keep the posts in place.
3. Install the Posts
Now that the posts are set into the ground, you can attach the 2X2 posts
4. Put on the Horizontal Slats
Now that the posts frame is in place, it is time to attach the horizontal slats.
5. Install the Vertical Slats
Secure the 1x2s in a vertical position to the horizontal slats.
6. Complete the Final Details
The trellis is now installed, but it can have its look improved in 2 ways: a decorative lath strip and post covers. The lath strip ensures adds to the aesthetics and the post covers serve the dual purpose of aesthetics and preventing the accumulation of water on the top of the posts.

How Much Does Trellis Installation Cost?

The cost of installing a trellis typically ranges from $650 to $950 on a national level. Most people spent approximately $800 for the installation of an 8-foot triangular vinyl trellis. If that sounds like it’s outside of your budget, consider a 6-foot fan-shaped metal trellis, which can cost as little as $350. That being said, prices can vary a lot based on the materials used, if you need it custom made, and the location that you would like to install it. For that reason it is best to call us for a free custom quote.
